Brunello di Montalcino "Sassocheto"

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011

Sangiovese

A warmer vintage than 2010. This wine is pure pleasure as a little heat benefits these cooler sites at higher elevations. A lush wine full of ripe red and black berry fruits like Morello cherry, star anise, and wilds herbs. Given the round, broad tannins this wine has aged gracefully. The last few hundred bottles have come straight from the winery at the beginning of 2021.

POINTS OF INTEREST

The top wine from Il Grappolo, "Sassocheto" is the local name for the Piano Nero vineyard at 1000 feet overlooking Sant'Angelo in Colle, the southwestern area of the DOCG. Aldo Giovannelli bought this small estate and established Il Grappolo in 1974. For nearly 50 years Il Grappolo as been making traditional Brunello the way it use to be made. With extended aging before release in traditional barrels and native yeast fermentation, this wine captures the terroir of Tuscany.
